Organic Hojicha - Green Tea

Grown at 600m in the finest tea growing region of Uji, Kyoto, this Organic Hojicha green tea is a charcoal roasted Sencha green tea. The Sencha tea leaves are traditionally roasted quickly in a porcelain pot over a high heat in order to avoid burning the leaves and locking in a caramelized, sweet flavour.

Hojicha was originally started in Kyoto in the 1920s by tea traders and has increased in popularity ever since. The flavours are very similar to that of a lightly roasted coffee but with a far lower tannic quality and a very low caffeine content. The roasting process burns off a lot of the caffeine which is why Hojicha is often enjoyed in the evenings.
